The blues is more than music — it's the foundation of American culture. We're committed to keeping it alive and growing for future generations.
Born from the African American experience in the Deep South, the blues gave rise to rock and roll, soul, R&B, and jazz. Without the blues, American music as we know it simply doesn't exist.
Yet blues music — particularly authentic, roots-based blues — faces real threats from changing radio formats, shrinking venues, and generational gaps in awareness. That's where KVBA steps in.
Through education, performance, scholarship, and community-building, KVBA ensures the next generation of Kalamazoo Valley residents grows up knowing, loving, and playing the blues.
KVBA partners with local schools to bring professional blues musicians into classrooms. Students learn about the history of the blues, its African American roots, and how to play basic blues structures. Our Blues in Schools program has reached thousands of students across Kalamazoo County.
Named in honor of beloved Kalamazoo blues pianist Bob Peters, this annual $1,500 scholarship supports graduating Southwest Michigan seniors active in music programs. Applications open each spring.

Bob Peters was a fixture of the Kalamazoo blues scene for decades — a gifted pianist, generous mentor, and tireless champion of the blues. The Boogie Woogie Bob Peters Scholarship carries his spirit forward by investing in the next generation of blues musicians.
Each year, KVBA awards scholarship funds to a young musician demonstrating exceptional talent, dedication to the blues tradition, and community involvement.
