Are you distraught by the simple fact that you did not make it to Memphis this winter to enjoy the sounds of blues music and the smells of great southern cuisine? Me too! But I have a simple solution as to how to get rid the the winter doldrums, and enjoy great food and drink, while enjoying great blues right here in our own backyard: the Local Blues Jam!
Several nights of the week, you can enjoy your favorite blues music performed by many of Kalamazoo’s best upcoming acts, as well as some of the best seasoned players of the great western Michigan area.
Starting with Sunday night, from 6:00 pm until 9:00, the Old Dog Tavern, 402 E. Kalamazoo Ave., features alternating host bands, including Seventh Son, the Gator Blues Band, the Cats in the Dog, Crossroads Resurrection, and, to fill out a 5-Sunday month, Big Trouble. There’s no cover for this jam, and there’s great food and a full bar available.
On Wednesday evenings at 8:00 pm, the Red Room Revival hosts a blues jam at 530 Comstock, just off Sprinkle Road, in the Red Room at the old Lamplighter venue. The music runs till around 10:00 pm, with a $3.00 cover charge.
Thursday’s weekly fare is at Rupert’s, 773 Michigan Ave., where Skinny Hodge hosts a more progressive blues jam starting at 9:30 pm and running till 11:30 or so. There’s no cover, and tasty micro-brewed beers are on tap.
Then, on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month, Big Trouble hosts its jam at Louie’s Trophy House Grill at 440 East North St., from 8:00 pm to 11:00. $3.00 cover, with great food and a full bar.
Most of the local blues fans know of the great weekend events in the area, but varied schedules and time constraints can sometimes make it difficult to get to these. This little list can help you find a way to Get Your Blues On, whatever night you have a chance to get out!
Come and join the fun! All are welcome!! It’s recommended to call ahead to insure that your favorite band is playing. Also, if you know of other ongoing blues jams, send the information to email@example.com by 10:00 am Thursdays, to get listed on the weekly blues calendar.
